About Perennials
Perennials are plants that come back every year. Some perennials are flowering, while some only get foliage. Some go dormant over the winter, dying down to the ground, and will send up new growth come spring. Perennials usually only bloom for a season or two each year. They also tend to have fewer flowers than annuals (plants that do not come back each season).
The Four Different Types of Perennials
- Short-lived types last 2-3 years.
- Long-lived types last 5 years or more.
- Herbaceous types have soft green stems and die back to the ground each winter in colder zones.
- Woody types may lose their leaves in fall or winter, but the root systems and stems stay alive.
How to Plant Your Perennials
- Gently remove the plant from its container and loosen the roots if the plant has become root bound.
- Plant with the same depth as their container
- Firm the plants into the soil with your hands and gently tamp the soil around them.
- Water the plants well at the base immediately after planting
- Add a 2-inch layer of mulch around your newly planted perennials to keep the weeds down.
